Costa Blanca Guidebook - The Story (So far!)
By Mike Dennison

It's an age-old question for teachers of any subject; "just how am I going to make my lesson fun and relevant".

For us teachers in Saturday Club we have to take into account our students have been in school all week leading up to the weekend and of course may well have had English language theory lessons from their regular teachers. The last thing they need on a Saturday morning is more of the same.

It's with that in mind I decided to research a fun way of bringing English to life and I looked in the latest Cambridge English teacher resources and picked the subject of 'My Town'. I'd been prompted to use it as a teaching tool owing to the students looking up their own hometowns on Google Maps and Street View whilst we were doing activities in the ICT room.

Since the middle of April, lessons have been planned to enable students to learn the vocabulary for a guide book including giving directions and prepositions of place. We also had a  photography module on Sat 15th May, good practice for them taking pictures of their hometowns. (See Photography Module post here)

One of the weekly modules included an activity in which the students designed the layout of a fictitious town. Working in pairs they were able to assign Parks, Schools, Sports stadiums and other features of a bustling town. The video below shows them hard at work in the classroom.
